Photographer Bio

I’m a French photographer based in Paris.

My favorite exercise is to walk the streets with the ultimate goal of capturing the extraordinary moment of our ordinary lives.

Adept of a moment photograph and fortuite encounter, I take as much pleasure to capture colors and contrasts in urban scenographies, as gestures and interactions of people in their environment.

I’m co-founder of the Parisian collective “Fragment” whose objective is to promote, through individual and collective series, a common culture drawing its origins in street photography.

Submission Information
In February 2018, I’ve spent few days in Japan (in Tokyo and Kyoto) for the first time. it was also my first contact with an Asian country.
These are few pictures from my dépaysement (It was really the case).

Supernatural place, filled with supernatural facilities
Country
Vietnam
Photographer Bio
My name is Josie Rae Turnbull. I’m from London and have lived in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for the last year, working as an artist educator. Most of the works I’ve submitted centre around my ongoing research into various forms of amusement parks in and around Saigon.
Submission Information
Over the last year I have been documenting the amusement parks in and around Saigon. Using 35mm photography and video, the work seeks to magnify the latent anxieties of these sites. The spaces serve as hyperbolic representations of nationhood, tailored to beguile, terrify and teach.

Umberto Eco’s text ‘Travels in Hyperreality’ discusses the impetus for the ‘hyperreal’, present in amusement parks and waxwork museums such as Disney World and Universal Studios. The theme parks in Vietnam disrupt this criteria, presenting frequent instances of fallibility and liminality.

Photographing the “backstage” areas of theme parks, outside of peak times, is an intrusive act, the photographing of collateral detritus an act of aggression which violates the performance of these objects and spaces.

Documenting unseen ‘trickery’ razes the suspension of disbelief, centering the private apparatus of public entertainment.

The amusement parks all incorporate Vietnamese iterations of animism. How does this relate to varying states of animation? Attractions, spaces and sculptures are constantly in the process of being inanimate-d, literally and through disposal or disrepair.

Photographer Bio
Nica Aquino is a multidisciplinary artist, analog photographer & educator originally from Los Angeles, California.

Aquino holds a BFA in Photography from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon and an MA in Visual Culture from the School of Art at Manchester Metropolitan University in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Her work reveals place, identity, diaspora and the cross-cultural experience through a photographic lens and a variety of mixed medias. Via photography, viewers see through the eyes of a first generation Ilokana-American attempting to navigate North American culture and drawing inspiration from the people and places around her, exploring the commonality of diverse immigrant diasporas and communities in the US and beyond.

Aquino has been working in non-profit organizations since 2015. She is now residing in Northeast Los Angeles, where she is an art educator for Center for the Arts Eagle Rock’s art program, Imagine Studio. She works with predominantly POC students of Title 1 status and is excited to share art with the kids in her community.

This city continues to fascinate me. I am invited by its enchantment: I feel the shutter release.

Its visuals are instantaneous, but by cutting them into a picture, they becomes universal and eternal.

This series includes both traditional street photography and portraits shot on the street. Although they are not candid photos, the portraits in “Tokyo Street” are based on (and influenced by) my candid street shots. As such, I could not have taken them if I did not also shoot street photography.

The portraits and my street photography are intertwined in a complex manner. The interaction between the two kinds of pictures makes the city more fascinating; the relationship between the two draws out the charm of this city.

Tokyo is sometimes cruel, sometimes seductive: I catch those moments.

Kutch district (also spelled as Kachchh) is a district of Gujarat state in western India. It is the largest district of India. In this district little village Hodko is an India-Pakistan border side remote village. Most of these villagers are illiterate. At one time they were nomadic. The main source of income is handicrafts. They also have little livestock for their own needs. This area submerged in water during the rainy season and becomes dry during other seasons, so agriculture is very difficult in this region. Girls have been married before 16-17 years. Women are always keeping their face covered with a traditional colorful veil, except chief lady and children. Women of the village Hodko hold a mysterious charm. They are both beautiful and hardworking but are vary of coming in front of the camera. I was very fortunate to see some faces.

I took the pictures at the Arms fair in Seoul in October 2017. They are part of my project “Nothing personal”. Nothing Personal is an ongoing project about war business. The opposite of a battlefield, the war business is a huge playground for adults with wine, finger food and shiny weapons. Dead bodies here are mannequins or pixels on screens of a huge number of simulators. Real bazookas and machine guns are plugged into flatscreens. Arms fairs are usually closed for public events with some exceptions. The pictures have been taken in Kielce, Poland, 2016, Minsk, Belarus and Seoul, South Korea in 2017.

Submission Information
Vasai Fort lies north of Mumbai and is situated near the banks of Vasai Creek, which resembles more of a vast river with distant banks barely visible at sunrise. After visiting the fort I wanted to capture the sunrise at the creek and finally discovered the correct route. When I got there, I was in for a treat. A boat was approaching which would be loading up with ice from an awaiting truck.I shot the sequence quickly as the men worked very fast and were loaded up and motoring away in under ten minutes.
